This project was in partnership with Return to Sender. The brief was to design a budget-driven coffin, made from materials that are kinder to the environment than MDF and plastic. My design addresses these issues while also tackling my noted opportunity concerning the user’s sense of identity. The curved, low sides of my design provide accessible viewing for the family, whilst still giving a feeling enclosure to the body. The materials used in the coffin are fully biodegradable and sustainable. New Zealand untreated pine plywood, and Portuguese cork are the primary materials. My design addresses my opportunity by using the cork as a medium for families to express their identity, by enabling personalisation of the coffin with whatever they choose, notes, flowers, photos, etc.
